Verner Panton

Verner Panton is a Danish designer and an influential 20th century furniture and interior stylist. During his career, Verner Panton designed many groundbreaking and futuristic pieces of furniture. For this purpose, he used an extensive range of materials. Especially plastics, in combination with very bright and exotic colours. The Verner Panton Chair, the well-known chair carrying its creator’s name is the very famous classic which, due to its S-shape, forms a true icon for the design lover.

Verner Panton designed this chair in 1959, because he was inspired by the design of  Gerrit Rietveld’s Zigzag chair . He wanted to create a special design in combination with gravity and in balance with the surroundings. Experiments were carried out with new theories about the bearing of surfaces and the lifting of materials. By experimenting continuously, the very first single-form injection-moulded plastic chair was created. The Verner Panton Chair became a true icon. In 1970, the Verner Panton Chair had made it to the front cover of the famous magazine Nova and 25 years later, in 1995, it was portrayed on the front cover of the British Vogue featuring a tempting Kate Moss on it. The Verner Panton Chair is made of plastic (Cast ABS). It is available in many appealing colours, but also in dull and bright finishes. White Verner Panton Chairs are the most popular. The reason for this probably lies in the subconscious mind, because white stands for brightness, purity, beauty and space.

Besides chairs, Verner Panton also designed lamps in which many cheerful flower and bulb shapes from the Flower Power Era play an important role. Verners’s most well-known products are still in production. Even a children’s version of his designs were introduced on the market in 2006.
